fara-picA native of Naperville, IL, Lieutenant Gregory T. Fara commissioned as a submarine officer in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Once commissioned, he completed Naval Nuclear Power training in Charleston, SC followed by a brief stop for submarine operations and tactics training in Groton, CT.

In May of 2020, LT Fara reported to Combat Submarine Squadron 6 of Norfolk, VA. Due to COVID-19 risk mitigations, he was unable to report to his first sea assignment, the USS JOHN WARNER (SSN-785) until their return from their 2020 deployment. In the meantime, he was temporarily assigned to the PCU MONTANA (SSN-794) of Newport News, VA. There, he served as the Electrical Assistant and attended dive school at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, FL.

Upon reporting to the JOHN WARNER in December of 2020, LT Fara served his Junior Officer tour fulfilling many billets such as Diving Officer, Chemical and Radiological Controls Assistant, Main Propulsion Assistant, Assistant Weapons Officer, and Weapons Officer. While onboard, JOHN WARNER deployed to the European Command area of responsibility throughout onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Upon return from deployment, the ship paid a visit at anchor to the Naval Academy prior to returning to Norfolk Naval Shipyard for an Extended Dry-Docking Selected Availability.

LT Fara reported to the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Unit, University of Utah in June 2023 where he serves as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science and Junior/Senior Advisor.

Lieutenant Fara’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NAM) and service awards.
